Judicial Officers - Superior Court Judges and Commissioners

The current Presiding Judge is the Honorable Jamie A. Jacobs-May. There are 89 judges and commissioners at the Superior Court in Santa Clara County. (A commissioner is a subordinate judicial officer appointed by the judges of the Court, and given the power to hear and make decisions in certain kinds of legal matters.)

Temporary ("pro tem") judges also serve in a judicial capacity at the Superior Court. A temporary judge is a lawyer who has volunteered to hear and decide cases.

Temporary Judges Program

The Court's Temporary Judges Program utilizes qualified and experienced attorneys who volunteer their time to serve in various divisions of the Court. The Presiding Judge's letter of invitation to the Bay Area legal community provides information about the Court's Temporary Judges' Program, and invites interested attorneys who have been members of the California State Bar for at least ten years to download and submit the Temporary Judges' Application form and Placement Questionnaire linked to this website.

Training for Temporary Judges at the Superior Court

The required classes "Judicial Ethics for Temporary Judges" and "Bench Conduct and Demeanor", as well as substantive classes, are offered at various times during the year by the Superior Court in Santa Clara County as part of the Temporary Judge Program.

Currently Scheduled Fall 2010 Classes:

  • Bench Conduct and Demeanor

    The Superior Court is offering a Bench Conduct and Demeanor training class as part of the Temporary Judge Program. MCLE credits will be provided to you at no cost.

    Prior to attending the Bench Conduct and Demeanor class please visit the website below and complete the two short exercises entitled Self Monitor Scale and Implicit Association Test:

    These exercises are for self-evaluation only. The results will assist you with the Bench Conduct and Demeanor class, however it is not necessary to save or bring them to the class.

  • Judicial Ethics

    You can take the Judicial Ethics course on-line at the Temporary Judge page of the AOC website  Upon completion of the course, please enter your name and the date and print out the certificate of completion and fax to the Temporary Judge Administrator at 408-882-2796.

    If you would prefer a classroom training instead of the on-line course, the Superior Court is offering the following Judicial Ethics training class as part of the Temporary Judge Program.

For the public: If you have a complaint about a court-appointed temporary judge, please print the complaint form and send the completed form to Temporary Judge Administrator at the address on the bottom of the form.

Judicial Officers Speakers Bureau

This program is designed to promote interaction between judicial officers and the public. The Speakers Bureau can provide judges and court commissioners to speak at community events, meetings, and school functions, and these presentations can be tailored to fit each organization’s needs and interests.
